NEW 2 3/4-INCH THICK, 6-INCH WIDE BULLNOSE
EQUATES
TO BETTER TIME MANAGEMENT
|
New! Cambridge
6 x 12 Bullnose in Sahara/Chestnut from The Crusader Collection
with ArmorTec and in Onyx/Natural from The Renaissance Collection
crafted with EuroTec. |
It’s Wider. Using the new Cambridge 6 x 12 Bullnose will result
in having to cut 1/3
less joints than a 4-inch Bullnose paver in a typical
installation. This equates to less “profit-eating” labor.
Lesser joints will also provide a more aesthetically appealing and more
fluid appearance as coping traces around a pool, spa or raised stoop.
It’s Thicker. The Cambridge 6 x 12 Bullnose is
2 3/4 in. thick, which can save even more time laying a pool coping (see
Cambridge Campus in this issue). In The Crusader Collection with ArmorTec,
four solid colors are available — Onyx, Ruby, Sahara
and Salmon — and nine Cambridge Blends — Chestnut/Bronze,
Chestnut/Salmon, Golden/Onyx, Onyx/Chestnut, Onyx/Natural, Ruby/Onyx,
Sahara/Chestnut, Salmon/Onyx and Toffee/Onyx. The Renaissance Collection
crafted with EuroTec offers solid Sahara and five Cambridge Blends — Golden/Onyx,
Onyx/Natural, Ruby/Onyx, Sahara/Chestnut and Toffee/Onyx. With this wide
range of colors to choose from, Cambridge 6 x 12 Bullnose is a perfect
match or complement to the colors and shapes of other Cambridge Pavingstones
used in the field or borders of any project.
There will be 144 pieces (72 linear ft./72 square feet) per cube. Cambridge
6 x 12 Bullnose will be available late September 2006. 4 x 12 and 4 x
8 Bullnose will
remain available.

Meeting The Demand. The trend toward larger units and embossed surfaces
on pavers has prompted the introduction of a new 3-piece kit from Cambridge.
With its natural clefts, Ledgestone III from the new Cambridge Sherwood
Collection affords users the look of sheared, natural stone without the
natural stone cost.
Consider these features and benefits:
- Modular design (13 1/4” x 8 13/16”, 8 13/16” x
813/16” and 813/16” x 43/8” units) with varying surface
textures eases random placement (see Cambridge Campus in this issue).
- Single cube configuration (114 sq. ft. per cube).
- Superior wearing surface and high PSI with the appeal of bluestone
and slate.
- Manufactured-in spacer bars for uniform and tight 1/16” joints,
optimum lock up and less required joint stabilizer.
- 23/8” thickness allows larger scale Ledgewood III units to
marry-up with other Cambridge shapes.
Cambridge Ledgestone III with ArmorTec is available in Chestnut/Bronze,
Chestnut/Salmon, Golden/Onyx, Onyx/Chestnut, Onyx/Natural, Ruby/Onyx,
Sahara/Chestnut, Salmon/Onyx and Toffee/Onyx. In distressed EuroTec,
it is offered in Sahara, Golden/Onyx, Onyx/Natural, Ruby/Onyx, Sahara/Chestnut
and Toffee/Onyx. Product availability is scheduled for October/November,
2006.

A Message To Our Readers
By Charles H. Gamarekian
Chairman/CEO Cambridge Pavers Inc.
Measuring Your Competitive Edge
From The Inside Out
Only
twenty-two years ago, there were about three manufacturers producing
concrete pavers in our market. Now, just two decades later,
there are ten producers with thirty or so combined machines pumping
out pavers… in an attempt to keep up with the demand! Last
year alone, the industry grew an astounding 25% – 40% with
more and more players on all levels competing for a piece of the
pie. More distributors and box stores to buy from… more
contractors to install… more advertising and promotional
devices to attract and persuade customers. This growth rate
is expected to continue for years to come. Trust me, this
is not a bad course of events. As demand for pavers increases,
so knocks opportunity. But before we open the door, let’s
look around inside.
|
Refreshing
and maintaining outdoor displays helps to make good first
impressions on new customers and also keeps old customers
coming back for more DesignScaping ideas. |
Distributors and contractors, do you fall into this growth mode?
Are
you concerned about losing market share to your competitor? We
need to recognize that with competition as aggressive as it is
these days, who isn’t? But don’t just look on
the outside to see what our competitors are doing, how close they
are to us, and how much cheaper they are selling product. Whether
we are a manufacturer, a distributor or a contractor, it may be
wise to also look to the inside of our own organizations.
What makes us tick?
The
simplest of oversights can easily give a competitor an edge up. For
example, have we taken the time to examine what it is that our
customers really want? Is it knowledge? Is it quick
and courteous service? How long does it take for us to provide
what our customer is expecting from us? What about confidence?
Sometimes
it’s as easy as saying “Did we have everything
that you are looking for? Or “Is there anything else
we can do for you today?”… Or
just “Can I answer any questions?”
Perception is an important motivator in turning
an inquiry into a sale.
It
starts with how your phone is answered. Will you be perceived
as a company that is in too much of a hurry to satisfy customer
needs? Fly-by-night? When face-to-face with the customer,
what is your dress code? Is it neat and professional ---
especially if you are on a sales call or behind the counter? These
things all speak to your company’s culture.
Take action:
Encourage your contractor-customers to send homeowners to see your outdoor
displays. Seeing is believing.
Remembering
a customer’s name is a win-win proposition. “Good morning
Sam. How’s it going today?” Think about it. Doesn’t
it make you feel good when the woman in the coffee shop addresses you by name
or the host at your favorite restaurant greets you by name and lets you know
that he or she wants to do whatever it takes to provide a wonderful evening?
Do you maintain
your sales aids — project portfolios, displays and company vehicles?
In the eyes of the customer, we score points for all of these things. And
contractors, do you get right back to prospects who call, do you show up for
appointments on time?
Don’t
get me wrong. Cambridge isn’t perfect. But we strive for
perfection every day and in every way. And, more importantly, we try
to earn your business with every truckload --- it’s never “business
as usual”.
By the way,
is there anything special that we can do for you today?

Thicker And Wider Cambridge 6 x 12 Bullnose Offers
An Advantage
As Pool Coping
Concrete
footing or quarry process used under new and thicker (2 3/4”),
Cambridge 6 x 12 Bullnose pool or spa coping can be filled to the
same level as the QP base for the field (see diagram). As
aresult, one uniform level of the base material is achieved. Combine
this feature with the extended 6” width, which requires less
cuts and as a result, fewer joints, and Cambridge 6 x 12 Bullnose
is an installer’s wish-come-true for this and a host of other
applications.
Installing A Random Pattern With Cambridge
Ledgestone III
The
3-piece Ledgestone III Kit comprises a 13 1/4” x 8 13/16”,
813/16” x 813/16” and 813/16” x 43/8” paver
all with natural clefts as found in bluestone. Each 23/8” thick
paver is a modular component of the 3-piece design, along the
lines of Cambridge 4-piece Random Design Kits, but in a larger
scale. We intended Ledgestone III to be laid in a random pattern
as well, but in keeping with typical patterns found in bluestone
or limestone installations where pavers meet at 3-way intersections
(see diagrams). 4-way intersections will take away from the appealing,
random placement look easily achieved with the Ledgestone III
Kit, and aspired for with other flagging products.
Protect That Dimpled Surface From Scuffing
By Steve Jones, President, PAVE TECH, Inc.

Thanks to the recent upswing of heavily textured surfaces for
interlocking concrete pavers, the incidence of surface scuffing
has increased. This is a result of several factors. First and
foremost, it is important that everyone in our industry understands
the additional costs and precautionary measures associated with
heavily textured surfaces on pavers. This includes informing
and educating sales people, dealers, contractors and even project
owners.
Charles Gamarekian of Cambridge Pavingstones, one of our industry’s
most respected paver manufacturers, recently told me that Cambridge
plants are equipped with technologically-advanced, multi-layer
and single-pallet production machinery, which is designed to
minimize or eliminate the occurrence of scuffing during the manufacturing
process. However, because a higher waste rate does exist, additional
steps are taken during the packaging phase to reduce surface
scuffing during transport. For example, at Cambridge sand is
sprinkled between layers of product produced on multi-layer machinery.
This provides the benefit of reducing or eliminating scuffing
during transport. Although most flatbed trailers today use air
ride suspensions, it is also prudent to confirm the type of suspension
prior to shipping of this type of paver.
Specialized Compaction Equipment Is Required
From
a contractor’s perspective, there are additional
costs and considerations. Contractors should be using specialized
equipment to reduce scuffing during the compaction phase of the
installation. Since contractors install these products for a
living, it is important that they are properly equipped to install
the product with minimal scuffing. The two main items to use
with compactors would be a urethane protection mat that bolts
to the bottom of the compactor. While this is an effective method
of protecting heavily textured surfaces, it does slow the compactor’s
speed increasing the labor cost. The other professional method
is a bolt-on frame with heavy-duty rubber covered steel rollers.
This product is excellent but almost eliminates the natural forward
movement of the compactor requiring the operator to push the
compactor the entire time, again increasing labor costs. Both
options also reduce the compaction force, which then require
additional passes with the compactor to achieve proper compaction
and surface lockup. The side benefit to the roller frame and
sometimes the urethane mat is that it can also be used on concrete
paving slabs, natural stone and clay brick. Additional costs
to the contractor would be a higher “cull” rate on
the job. As long as everyone in the process knows of these issues
when making product decisions and providing quotations then there
will not be a problem. Cambridge Pavingstones, a leader in contractor
support and innovation, is proud to offer these specialized pieces
of equipment provided by PAVE TECH, INC. For further details,

ANNOUNCING CAMBRIDGE-SPONSORED
2-DAY LEVEL I ICPI CONCRETE PAVER
INSTALLER CERTIFICATION PROGRAM
IN NEW JERSEY
By Charles H. Gamarekian, Jr.
WED., NOV. 1 & THURS., NOV.
2, 2006
Course Description
Again this
year, Cambridge Pavingstones continues to be
a proud sponsor of the Level I ICPI Concrete Paver Installer
Certification Program in New Jersey. Interlocking Concrete
Pavement Institute (ICPI) presents these practical 2-day courses
in an effort to promote the proper use and installation of
concrete pavers. Courses are designed to enhance the knowledge
of individuals involved in the construction of interlocking
concrete pavements. Noted speakers and educators will present
the curriculum, which typically includes topics such as contract
basics, job layout, planning and installation, soil classification
and compaction, the use of labor saving tools and lots more.
The program teaches industry guidelines needed by owners and
supervisors
of paver contracting firms in this growing business. Minimum
standards, as established by ICPI, can even help experienced
installers rate their company’s performance in areas such
as workmanship, efficiency and profitability. Inside and outside
sales personnel in our Authorized Distributor Network are also
urged to attend. While today’s consumers expect installers
of interlocking pavements to be certified and many design professionals
specify installation by ICPI certified installers, it is equally
important that our Authorized Cambridge Distributors have an
all-inclusive knowledge of relative products and installation
techniques when dealing with their contractor-customers. Tuition
for both days is $195.00 for ICPI members and $250.00 for non-members.
About The Instructors
Bob Grimm brings over 35 years of experience
in the concrete products industry. He is a former ICPI Director,
currently a certified instructor, and advises on new plant construction,
production and organizational efficiency.
Ross Yantzi, owner of Ross Yantzi’s Pavestone Plus, has
been a paver installer since 1986. He has taught over 3,000 installers
since 1997 in 20 different states and provinces.
Special Dinner Session
Contractors and distributors who will
not be attending the course are invited
to the special Dinner Session on Wednesday where Cambridge will
introduce new products for 2007 — Cambridge Pavingstones
featuring 3M™ ColorQuartz™ Crystals, 6” Wide
Bullnose and Ledgestone III — and demonstrate our interactive
DesignScape Visualizer™ “before & after” imaging
software. Industry experts will also discuss current topics.
For dinner reservations, contact Charles Gamarekian, Jr. at Cambridge,
